To the FRIENDS of Northwest Classen

REMEMBERING 2009
Harn Homestead was the site of A Knight to Remember Homecoming hosted by FRIENDS of Northwest Classen High School Foundation. Billye Battles Austin and Ronald J. Norick, graduates of the Class of ‘59, were honored as Homecoming Queen and King at the western celebration. The fundraising event attracted alumni from all over the state and many from out-of-state. The Annual FRIENDS Golf Tournament was held the following day for more fun and time with FRIENDS. The events raised $75,000 for Northwest Classen.

GRANTS AND CELEBRATION

Excitement and anticipation filled the Northwest Classen High School Auditorium as distinguished Alumni came back to their Alma Mater for the FRIENDS of NWC High School Foundation Grants Presentation and Celebration...we came back to remember and hopefully inspire. We quickly realized we were the ones being inspired. We were inspired to see the Cryslurs in their “Black Tie” dress attire, which was purchased through grants from FRIENDS. We were inspired when we learned the science scores for NWC have gone up 21 percent, in part, because of FRIENDS contributions to the Science Department. We were inspired by the student body that would not stop cheering for their Principal Ms. Tami Sanders when she took the stage. We were inspired because a group of FRIENDS, working together, have made a difference. We were inspired by the students, their parents, the teachers and the faculty at NWC and we were inspired by the guest alumni speaking at this celebration.

Jim Daniel, Class of ‘58, Vice Chairman of BancFirst Corporation, recalled his experience as pitcher on the first NWC All-State Baseball team. He spoke about life lessons learned from his coach and friendships with his teammates. His years at NWC taught him the importance of relationships and trust, which has served him throughout his successful business career. Jim is eager to assist FRIENDS in fundraising possibilities for the Athletic Department.

Nancy Robertson, Class of ‘74, Senior VP of Communications at Sonic, America's Drive-In, spoke about the confusion she felt during her high school years. Being an excellent student helped hide her insecurity of being accepted. Her heartfelt message touched us all. She shared with us how important the support and friendship of her teachers at NWC were to her future. She said “not a day goes by that I don’t think of and thank those teachers.”

Kirk Humphreys, Class of ‘68, The Humphreys Company, spoke of his work while Mayor of Oklahoma City, when MAPS for Kids was approved by voters. MAPS for Kids improvements at NWC will begin soon. Kirk remarked, “The Auditorium housed within the walls of Northwest Classen is certainly a diamond in the rough with a seating capacity for 1,500. There’s no other facility like it in northwest Oklahoma City.” Kirk kicked off the FRIENDS Auditorium Fund at the Harn Homestead event. He committed $1,000, as well as, a seat for each of his siblings to start. Other FRIENDS joined him that evening and we now have $39,000 in the Fund.
